One Skein
by Leigh
Radford
Interweave Press and Leigh Radford teamed up to create this interesting
book of knitting patterns based on one skein per project. The
entire
title is “One Skein – 30 Quick Projects to Knit and
Crochet.” This
book is well written with easy to follows instructions and plenty of
illustrations. Sized at just 8”x 9”, it
will fit easily into a knitting bag for projects on the go.
Don’t think that these patterns are just
“fluff” for all its single skeins! Leigh
uses many interesting design features like cables, elongated stitches
and reverse stockinette to create texture and interest. Each
pattern is different and unique; there is no theme other than the
single skein. Towards the back of the book Leigh includes a
section on using “stash” yarns, those bits and
pieces of skeins that collect and multiply in your knitting closets.
I found this book to be both useful and practical. Leigh
includes
clothing from foot covers to head covers and several decorative
patterns
for the home. While it is predominantly a knitting book, she
also includes
some felting and a bit of crochet. Included at the back are
pages of
well illustrated, simple instructions for beginning knitters.
My only criticism of the book is the use of a model with
tattoos.
Now before I get hate mail from those who love tattoos, let me
explain. I found my eyes drawn to the design on the person
instead of the design on the garment. It is very
distracting. Be sure you look past this and really focus on
the garments and accessories themselves.
